About Conclave Scholarships

Since 1979, the non-profit Conclave - in keeping with its mission of educating the broadcast industry - has been awarding scholarships to deserving students desiring an education inside the radio and music industries. The Conclave has announced its 2012 scholarship application drive for the Radio Industry broadcast scholarships to attend Broadcast Center/St. Louis, MO or Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts/Southfield, MI (The Bill Gavin Memorial Scholarship), and a 2012 Music Business Scholarship to McNally-Smith College of Music in St. Paul, MN. Once again, the Doug Lee Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to two deserving college radio students (with thanks to dmr who are underwriting this scholarship). New this year: a scholarship to Media Institute of either Madison, WI or Minneapolis, MN. In all, these five Conclave scholarships represent a value approaching $100,000!  Applications for 2012 scholarships are available now at radioscholarships.com. About Conclave Awards

The Rockwell Award

The Rockwell Award is the Conclave’s highest honor. It is a tribute to those who have contributed to the industry through example and inspiration. It is presented to those who have achieved personal goals while guiding others to their highest level of attainment. The Rockwell Award is the Conclave’s only lifetime achievement recognition.

The Rockwell Award was created in 1989 as a tribute to longtime Conclave Board member and Wisconsin radio owner/operator/morning man, Mike Rockwell. Honoring individuals who have contributed to the industry as mentors, benefactors, and friends, the Rockwell Award is presented annually to deserving individuals as selected by the Conclave’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

2011 Rockwell Recipients - DAN MASON & STEVE RIVERS!

The Conclave is proud to announce the 2011 Rockwell Award has been awarded to TWO longtime radio executives – CBS Radio’s President & CEO Dan Masonand Pyramid Radio EVP/Chief Programming Officer Steve Rivers! Both will be honored at the annual Awards Luncheon during the Conclave Learning Conference scheduled for Friday July 15th at the Doubletree Park Place Hotel in Minneapolis. 

Tom Kay, Executive Director of the Conclave, commented, “The Rockwell Award is recognizes those who have contributed to the rich legacy of the radio industry, communicating, inspiring and mentoring. Both Dan and Steve epitomize those contributions. Their professional connection through CBS Radio and their personal connection as long-time friends, make their selection as this year’s Rockwell recipients that much more special!”

“Thank you to Tom Kay and everyone at the Conclave for this distinguished honor,” said Dan Mason.  “As someone who has had the privilege of working in radio for their entire career I am humbled to be named a Rockwell recipient.””

Steve Riversreflected: “I am so thrilled to be named a recipient of the  Conclave’s Rockwell Award. I thank the Conclave for this honor, and very much  look forward to sharing the stage this summer with my longtime co-worker and  dearest friend, Dan Mason.”

Dan Masonserves as President and Chief Executive Officer of CBS Radio.  In this role, he oversees all aspects relating to CBS Radio's 130 stations, as well as the day-to-day operations of the division. Mason returned to CBS RADIO in April 2007 (he had served as President of CBS Radio from 1995-2002) after serving as an adviser and consultant to CBS and other domestic and international companies in the radio broadcasting industry for the five years prior. As the executive responsible for operating the group's then 184 stations in the largest markets across the United States, Mason successfully integrated the original CBS, Group W, Infinity Radio and American Radio Systems stations.  Mason joined Westinghouse as President of Group W Radio in 1993. As president of CBS Radio, Mason has initiated an aggressive growth strategy and launched new formats at more than two dozen stations across the country, positively impacting the division’s overall performance. Dan was the Conclave keynoter in 1998.

Steve Rivershas served as the Executive VP-Programming Officer for Pyramid Radio since 2003. At Pyramid, Steve implemented the company’s in-store audio advertising program which, integrated with entertaining music, builds brand awareness and provides advertisers the opportunity to reach millions of consumers. Prior to Pyramid, Steve served as President of Programming for CBS Radio, where he was instrumental in the success of scores of radio stations nationwide and was responsible for the growth and development of dozens of programmers. In his career, Steve has consulted radio companies worldwide and across the USA including AOL Radio, Corus Radio (Canada), Heart-FM London, UK and created an Internet Radio Company (Radiocentral). Steve keynoted the Conclave in 2000.

 

2010 Rockwell Recipient - VALERIE GELLER!

The Conclave is proud to announce the 2010 Rockwell Award has been awarded to noted broadcast consultant and author, Valerie Geller! She will be honored at the annual Awards Luncheon, Friday July 16th during the 35th annual Conclave Learning Conference at the Doubletree Park Place Hotel in Minneapolis. (July 15-17, 2010).

MusicMaster SVP Mark Bolke, Chairperson of the Conclave Board, commented, “Valerie Geller represents the essence of the Rockwell award. I am so very pleased she will be recognized for her contributions to our industry.”

Upon notification of her Rockwell accolade, Valerie exclaimed, “"Thank you! I'm looking forward to this year's conference and am deeply honored and delighted to be named as this year's recipient of the prestigious Rockwell Award!  The Conclave, a great organization, is one of radio's treasures."

Broadcast consultant Valerie Geller is the author of Creating Powerful Radio—Getting, Keeping & Growing Audiencesand President of Geller Media International. She works with more than 500 stations in 30 countries to help programmers, on-air personalities, journalists and managers learn techniques to strengthen the programming and grow audiences. Her fourth book: Beyond Powerful Radio - A Communicator's Guide For The Internet Agewill be available from Focal Press in March 2011. In addition to this year’s Rockwell Award, Valerie has collected many honors including recently being named one of Radio Ink's 2010 "Most Influential Women in Radio".

2009 Rockwell Recipients - STEVEN GOLDSTEIN & KIPPER MCGEE!

The Conclave is proud to announce the 2009 Rockwell Award has been awarded to TWO longtime radio executives – Saga Communications’ Steve Goldstein and programmer/consultant Kipper McGee! Both will be honored at the annual Awards Luncheon (sponsored by Arbitron) during the Conclave Learning Conference scheduled for Friday July 17th at the Sheraton Hotel South in Minneapolis.

Tom Kay, Executive Director of the Conclave, commented, “The Rockwell Award is meant to recognize those who have contributed to the rich legacy of the industry in broadcasting, communicating and mentoring. Both Steve and Kipper epitomize those contributions. We’re proud to count them as friends and now, deserving honorees of the Conclave.”

Upon notification of his Rockwell accolade, Goldstein remarked, “This is a terrific honor from one of radio’s truly great organizations – The Conclave. I appreciate the recognition.” And McGee reflected, "This award reflects the Conclave's values of quality radio, community service, and betterment of our industry which Mike Rockwell exemplified. Having had the great good fortune of serving with Mike during the the early days of the Conclave board, I'm both humbled and deeply honored to join the all-star ranks of recipients, including my former colleague, mentor and co-recipient, Steve Goldstein, in receiving this recognition.”

Steve is Executive Vice President and Group Program Director for Saga Communications, and has been employed by Saga since its inception in 1986. Prior to his Saga affiliation, he was Vice President and Group Program Director of Josephson Communications, Program Director for Capital Cities/ABC Inc. at WHYT-FM in Detroit, PD at WOMC-FM in Detroit and programmed WTIC-FM in Hartford. He’s also served as Regional Manager, Affiliate Relations with the NBC Radio Network, News Anchor at ABC Radio Network and Assistant Program Director of WABC-AM in New York City. Mr. Goldstein holds a BA in Communications Management from Ithaca College. Steve serves on the Conclave’s Advisory Board.

Kipper considers himself “a recovering radio program director.” His resume as a PD/Operations Manager includes WLS/Chicago, WDBO/Orlando, and KBEST 95/San Diego. He’s also programmed in Des Moines, Milwaukee, New Orleans, St. Louis, Rockford & Waterloo. . He’s now a consultant at his own company, and – in his words – “is now focused on bringing the exciting opportunities of digital media to those not yet converted within the 'original' wireless community.” Kipper is a highly-sought motivational speaker, appearing at many broadcast association meetings, and is a frequent presenter at the Conclave Learning Conference. Kipper has served several stints as a member of the Conclave Board of Directors.
