To be eligible as an intern under this program the applicant must be:
- At least 18 years of age;
- undergraduate college student working toward a degree in either a 2 or 4 year program;
- resident of Tennessee or attending school in Tennessee;
- fully eligible to participate in his or her school’s internship program at a broadcast station;
- first time participants into the program;
- not related to an employees of the station where they intern.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS- STATIONS:
To be eligible as a station under this program the station must be:
- a commercial AM, FM or TV broadcast station;
- that is currently a member of the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters.
THE SELECTION PROCESS:
Selecting – The final selection is at the station’s discretion. In addition to complying with all his or her school’s requirements for an internship, all interns should apply for the program via written letter of application to the station, in addition to the station’s normal hiring procedure. Following the selection of your candidate, complete and return the questionnaire to the TAB office in Nashville for approval by TAB. TAB will select up to twelve stations annually to participate in this program. There is no deadline for the stations to submit applications, however, participating stations may be selected on a first come, first served basis. TAB requires that each station desiring to participate in this program notify TAB of its intent to do so before July 1, 2004.
PROGRAM PARAMETERS:
The Tennessee Association of Broadcasters will allow twelve (12) stations to participate in the program. Interns will not be paid. If the intern successfully completes the internship as determined by both his or her school and the station, the TAB and the participating station will each contribute $750.00 (a total of $1500.00) to the intern’s school as a credit to that intern’s fees and tuition for the term/semester immediately following the internship.
TRAINING:
After an orientation session designed to introduce the intern to their new training environment, the intern should be exposed to the full gamut of experiences germane to the broadcasting industry. The intern training developed by the participating stations should include the areas outlined in the enclosed Tennessee Association of Broadcasters checklist. Once exposed to the various departments in the station, the intern and his/her manager should choose an area of interest for more sophisticated training. (This should occur after approximately one-third of the internship is completed.)
QUALITY CONTROL:
- The Tennessee Association of Broadcasters, where possible, will monitor the progress of the program through telephone interviews with participating stations.
- Each station will be entirely responsible for supervising its interns and for complying with all laws relating to the internship. In addition to the requirements of the intern’s school, at the conclusion of the internship, the station must send a final report to the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters and it must contain the following:
- A written evaluation of the experience by the supervisor on the intern’s performance and attitude, as well as comments regarding the program in general.
- A written evaluation of the experience by the intern including the intern’s intentions to further a career in broadcastings
- Copies of time cards/sheets signed by the intern and station management showing all hours the intern participated in the program.
- The return of the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters Intern Department Checklist and the completed Independent Contractor’s Agreement.
